Vinyl and chain link fence installation

Fences you don't have to stain: vinyl for clean-looking privacy, chain link for practical, see-through security.

Not everyone wants to restain a fence every few summers. Vinyl and chain link both skip that chore, and both show up all over the newer neighborhoods west of Bozeman and around Belgrade. They work well here when they're installed with the valley's wind and cold in mind.

Vinyl fences

Vinyl (PVC) fences come in privacy, semi-privacy, picket and ranch-rail styles, usually in white, tan or wood-grain colors. They don't rot and wipe clean. A few things to ask about:

  • Wind. Solid vinyl panels catch wind like any privacy fence. Ask about post reinforcement, such as aluminum inserts or concrete-filled posts, on long or exposed runs.
  • Cold. Vinyl gets stiffer and more brittle in deep cold, so a hard hit in January can crack a panel that would flex in July. Quality material holds up better.
  • Expansion. Rails need room to expand and contract with big temperature swings.
  • HOA colors. Many covenants list approved colors and styles.

Chain link fences

Chain link is the go-to fence for dog runs, side yards, garden enclosures and anywhere you want security without blocking the view. Galvanized is the basic option; black or green vinyl-coated chain link blends into a yard. Privacy slats can be added, though they add wind load.

Dogs and snow

A fence that holds a dog in July might not in February, when drifts pile up along it. If you have a jumper, ask about a taller fence or keeping the snow side clear.

The contractor prices the fence after walking the line, checking the ground, gates and access, and talking through what you want. We don't quote prices, and a number given over the phone before anyone has seen the property is only a rough starting point.

Common questions

Does vinyl fencing crack in Montana winters?

Vinyl gets more brittle in very cold weather, so impacts can crack it. Quality material and reinforced posts help. Damaged panels can usually be replaced individually.

Can I add privacy slats to chain link?

Yes. Slats add privacy but also add wind load, so the posts and framework need to be up to it.
